06.30 Ifield – Early morning sky thick with mist – but not raining. A hopeful sign.

08.00 Crawley Station – Sun breaks through the mist – heralding a clear blue sky.  Looking good.


08.17 – Train to Amberley Station

09.00 – A View of Houghton Bridge from the Riverside – capturing all that makes this area so special.


09.10 – Riverside Restaurant for breakfast – with an unexpected welcome from ‘the boss’ Francesca.

11.00 – Ten intrepid walkers meet up at Amberley Station, including grand-daughter Ruth Joad, Clare Toole-Mackson (who wrote a Joad article in Arundel’s “The Bell” magazine), and its editor Gill Farquharson.

Joad is show-cased at Arundel Museum for a week – starting from today (April 8):
